Hi,

If you still have a skein of Essential flint tweed, would you be interested in selling it? I just discovered that it takes two to make a pair of socks, and I only bought one. The color seems to be discontinued.

Thanks

Hello-
A few months ago I bought some Glenisla green variegated wool yarn from Ben Franklin in Redmond. I am almost finished with my project but needed one additional ball. Ben Franklin no longer carries this color nor does any of the neighboring Ben Franklin. I saw your website come up when I searched the net for Genisla yarn from Sierra Pacific. In your experience, do you have any ideas about how I can go about locating and ordering just one last ball of this Glenisla wool yarn in the variegated green color?

WTFH? Who does that, seriously? Maybe a friend, but a random waiter? I'd instinctively just jerk away (and in the process, potentially drop more stitches than I might have had the person just taken it...)

Whenever I knit in public, people always just ask "Will you knit me something?" I mean like, random people at the bus stop. I know that they're joking but it's soooo old...

(Sorry for the old comment, I'm *really* behind on Google Reader, LOL.)

Reprint yay! I won't be getting it (not interested), but I suppose it does bode well for reprints of other things? Although I've forgotten the exact reasons for the copyright drama on her books, so maybe not.

There is ONE copy of Aran Knitting in my library system (about 50 libraries) -- first time I checked there were two, but one must've been "lost." They have noooo idea what they have D:

I've just recently finished my first ever quilting project - it's about 4 foot square, and I love it. We have other, bigger blankets, but since usually only my legs/feet get cold, it's perfect for sitting and watching TV.

Plus, since it's not made of yarn, it doesn't snag my yarny projects >.>

New methods of craft really are hard to avoid. ...I have failed at that. I picked up things for tablet-weaving last week. My only defense is that the apparatus takes up as much space as a small deck of cards.

It's still a flimsy defense.

Thanks for the compliment! And I love your LEGO shapes! Neat idea! :D

I think you can chalk my interest in powers of two up to general nerdiness. One of the things I love about knitting is that, fundamentally, knitting patterns are all based around math. I've had to dig up more high school algebra since I started knitting than I ever needed for anything else in my day-to-day life! Squares and powers of two are a pretty natural fit, and my husband's also pretty fascinated by powers of two.

Sadly, the powers of two blanket may end up getting recycled into a much faster-to-knit project. I definitely want to do something along these lines eventually, but those mitered squares are a real pain! Maybe I should think about some other kind of square. :)

The Powers of Two blanket is very cool. I love powers of two myself, but I build them with Legos. I did one with rectangular shapes so they'd stack better (take a look at http://www.exploringbinary.com/my-fascination-with-binary-numbers/).

Not many people are fascinated with powers of two -- where did you get your inspiration?

It is indeed! 50% acrylic/50% nylon -- when you were out in Seattle, it's the amazing acrylic I was working with. :) A quick Google search for retailers turns up The Yarn Barn, and there's a list of local retailers on the Dark Horse Website. :)

That was my other worry with the Malabrigo - didn't know if she was OK with wool/merino. As it is, though, people are right when they say there is butter that is scratchier than Malabrigo, and it's wonderful to knit with. I lurve it.

Is that the dark horse synthetic stuff? And if so, do you know of a place to get it online?

Hee! Grey is my favorite color. >_> I've never tried Malabrigo! Is it as awesome as everyone says?

(Sadly, our favorite boomkin has animal-fiber sensitivities, or I would have gone with this cashmere/silk stuff I have stashed! But I'm so, so happy that I found a synthetic that is a joy to work with. I almost wouldn't know it wasn't wool if I hadn't read the label!)

Epic bracers indeed! I'd actually been thinking of doing a project like this with some malabrigo I have around... but you've beaten me to it (and these are prettier anyway - the colorway I have is grey with light blue and purple speckles). Totally gorgeous!

Lovely! I've been wanting to make myself some (actually, I started, but I was trying some bamboo yarn which I decided I didn't actually like--can't remember why now--so I never finished 'em.). I'll probably finish them by the time summer rolls around! But, yours are grapetastic!

I have a half-finished homespun "prayer shawl" around here somewhere - I knit on it until I get annoyed enough with Homespun to want to throw it, and then it goes back in its bag in the stash drawer. I should feel bad, but I don't really.

It might not be soft, but the colors are just gorgeous. So soft and muted!

As for not-soft sheeps, I have some of the wool (in a batt) that was used to spin the thread for the "elven cloaks" in Lord of the Rings... and I'm not sure I've felt anything so wiry - not even Lincoln! I've not spun it yet (still working my way through the buttery BFL and Corriedales), so no idea what it'll eventually become.

This is hilarious - and the bath fizzies really do look like little sheep. Sometimes, even if they bloom and get all big like that, they'll still fizz if the fizzing reaction hasn't been totally fizzed out. Fingers crossed that you were able to do something with them!

[...] I was surprisingly pleased with this scarf. Dark Horse Fantasy is definitely the nicest acrylic I've ever laid hands on, and I'd work with it again, no problem. And the pattern came out lovely! So lovely that I decided to do something I've never done before -- I wrote up the pattern. [...]

The pattern is "A Felt Flock" from FiberTrends! I'm "SheepLass" over on Ravelry, and the rainbow sheep are getting posted as I finish 'em, too. :) I have a Camoflauge Sheep I really need to post there. :D

Hey - just wanted to stop by and say that I love your blog, and that I have a non-wow blog (it's my link) where I talk about knitting and spinning sometimes! I love the sheep!

<3 Anna

Oh - and I've found that though I vastly prefer natural fibers (give me wool, cotton, or linen anyday. bamboo too!), some of the newer synthetic blends are really quite nice.

Hi Alison!

My best suggestion would be to try eBay; I've seen a lot of sheep come up there over the years, even replacements for dearly-loved ones. Sometimes it takes a few weeks, but it seems to be everybody's best bet. Good luck to you and your little one!

Our 'Woolo' is called Haggie,a much loved constant companion of my little boy. Today we've had to come to terms with the fact that we have lost Haggie whilst away for the weekend at Amroth Pembrokeshire. The tears are still flowing!! any ideas of where we can find a replacement.

I just picked up the book from the library. And wow, *many* of the pics here are crap for showing the pieces.
I usually transcribe charts to graph paper... but I'm thinking that may not work here... way way too big. Eep.
Well. I'll deal with it when the time comes, yeah?

Not tough at all! The hardest part is following the chart, honestly, which is something like 81 stitches and doesn't have any markers to help you out. I've taken to putting a piece of paper above the row I'm working on as a visual guide and muttering out loud with every row. It gets easier when you've been going for a while, though, 'cause you can sort of line up your current row against the last one. :)

Dang, that's some serious progress. I itch to start on it myself, but I'm standing firm on not starting until I've finished something. And heck, I just finished a wrap, so. Yeah.

I haven't actually seen the pattern, so I'm on the clueless side. How hard is this? Looks like it shouldn't be bad. Difficult enough to be interesting. Y'know?

Cable needles aren't popular? *boggles* Okay, I tend not to use actual cable needles; I just grab an appropriately sized dpn and stick it behind my ear when not in use. I'd just lose cable needles. I have a hard enough time with my dpns as it is.

Never used row counters. I just count the rows. Goes to show how many big projects I've done. Yeah, that would be none.

Hi Kathie! I just got your comment regarding your daughter's lamb. :)

I took a couple of pictures of all the Woolos in my collection. They look very similar to me... they just vary in terms of size:

http://gallery.sheeponmystuff.com/v/200803/woolos/

The first picture is all four of them, the second picture is just the smallest three so you can see a little more detail on them.

The one on the left is HUGE, though he measures only about 15" tall when sitting. (If he were sat up straighter, he'd be taller, but he's so big that I couldn't get a picture of him "pulled up straight" on my own!) The second one is about 12" tall when sitting, the third one is about 9" tall when sitting, and the fourth one is about 6" tall when sitting.

Woolo comes from the Russ Berrie company ("Woolo" is the name on the tag), and 2003 seems like about the right time for him.

I hope this helps, and that eBay comes through for you! I've had pretty good luck finding sheep there myself. :)

Hi There. After 2 weeks of frantically searching to replace my daughter beloved lamb, I am a least close. I am certain that "Lobby" is a Woolo. I've found a few on eBay, but they don't all look the same.... and I can't remember the details! After stumbling upon your website, you mentioned that many are in the Woolo family. You woundn't happen to know which style was sold in or around 2003 would you? I would REALLLLLY appreciate your help, the tears won't stop, and you appear to be the only Woolo expert out there! Thanks! Kathie

Lime & Violet are fantastic. Also, the Knitting News Cast, though it hasn't been updated in a while.

What a very cunning bag!

A woman walks around with a bag like that, and you know she's not afraid of anything. *grin*

I keep thinking I should make such a bag. A good felted bag. I feel inspired. But still mired in a very long, excessively cabled scarf in a yarn I do not like (but I'm knitting for a friend), so I shall wait.

I can't bear to! I wasn't fond enough of this yarn to try using it again, and also, the way I wove in ends (de-plying the yarn and weaivng in each ply individually) would make frogging it a misery.

Have started up again with more stash yarn, and it's going much better this time! I hope!
